RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels leading to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
