Explosion Costs 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Property Removal Operation in the Verona Area

Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen people were hurt in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house in the vicinity of Verona to execute an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled after the incident was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the location showed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the farmhouse was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno told news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast directly hit our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the Interior Minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
