Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
