Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial names under consideration to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on the weekend following the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight season.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have previous links to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they start the search of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not need to provide any compensation.
