The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
